Overthinking
Don’t let it get to you.
Those memories in your head.
Those bad moments are not true.
Overthinking makes it worse.
Living The Same Thing Twice
Even though it’s not happening,
You can’t help but wonder if it’s you.
Are you one of the few people I confide in?
And now I’m afraid that I’ll lose you.
Those fears and insecurities…
I just don’t understand where they came from?
Overthinking made me do it.
Being sad and depressed
Over things that will never happen.
Over things that will never be true.
Those memories are only in my head.
Trust me; those moments are not true.
Stop that over-the-top thinking.
Don’t let it get to you.
How this Poem Idea Came To Me!
The idea for this poem sparked when I was overthinking myself. I was worried about how I was going to get things done. Many tasks are left unfinished, and there are loads of things to do. But then I thought, panic mode isn’t helping at all. I’m the one who’s going to do it in the end. Nobody else will do it for me anyway.
Sooner or later, you’ll realize that making worst-case scenarios in your head just makes you overthink situations while they actually have nothing to do with real life.
I recently listened to this podcast by Breeny Lee. She was talking about Self-Sabotage.
Here are the links: (Not-sponsored) for the Spotify and Apple Podcast.
There was a personal story that she shared. That she was enjoying pool time at a great hotel in Dubai. She glanced at that huge skyscraper building and suddenly started thinking, “What if someone jumps out of the highest floor of the building, then he’ll fall into the swimming pool, and it’ll be a pool of blood.” Then she realized how stupid she was to even think of something so irrelevant.
I like this story because it describes how our brain is constantly on auto-pilot. We think a lot, but those worst-case scenarios never actually happen.
You cannot pressure your mind into not thinking about something. But what you can do is…
Notice the thoughts
Negative thoughts can be incredibly destructive and lead to feelings of guilt, anxiety, and depression. Learning how to observe your negative thoughts from a neutral perspective is important to stop the negative thought spiral. Don’t pressure your mind into stopping thinking; simply let the thoughts come and go without judgment. This will help you develop a more objective perspective on your thoughts and may help you reduce their power over you.
Start Replacing
Start replacing those bad thoughts with good ones. Once you feel like you’re about something that doesn’t serve you, immediately start thinking about something else. Let me give you an example of a unique method I’ve created.
The next time you dwell on negative thoughts, ask yourself, “What’s the best that can happen today?” Recognizing your thoughts and asking this question can help you snap out of your funk. By considering the possibility that things might not be as bad as they seem, you can open yourself up to a more positive outlook.
And who knows? Maybe the best thing that could happen is exactly what you need to get out of your current situation.
Shift Your Focus
We all have thoughts, both positive and negative. But, are they really good or bad? Or, are they purely a work of our mind’s focus? To have a good life, we must shift our focus to the good. Our thoughts create our reality. Negative thoughts produce negative outcomes. If we think positively, we will get positive results. It’s that simple!
So, how do we go about shifting our focus to the good? We simply need a mental shift. Start looking for the good in everything and everyone. Even if we don’t have much, we should be thankful for what we do have. And most importantly, we need to forgive ourselves and others. When we do this, our lives will change for the better!
Final Thoughts
I hope you’ll use the technique above to improve yourself. Let me know in the comment section about your experience with your mind creating worst-case scenarios where you suddenly catch it and are like, “What was I thinking?”
